Over the past 25 years, she has performed with well-known and diverse musicians from Leonard Bernstein to John Williams, Anton Kuerti, Placido Domingo, Brian Wilson, Smokey Robinson, and Diana Krall. The New York New Music Ensemble, Dinosaur Annex, ALEA III, the Worcester Chamber Music Society, Xanthos Ensemble, Music at Eden’s Edge, QX String Quartet, and the Lydian String Quartet have presented his works locally. Mark also maintains an active career as a composer, having received awards from the League of Composers/ISCM and ASCAP. Mark has recently performed with the Radius Ensemble, Boston Musica Viva and Ludovico Ensemble. An avid chamber musician with a particular interest in performing new music, he is a member of the Lydian String Quartet, Music at Eden’s Edge and has a duo partnership “The Two Composers” with pianist/composer Ketty Nez. Later that year, Humor are booked to play the Otherlands Festival at Scone Palace, near Perth, which Doig describes as “very special” for him as it is not far from his birthplace.īut when it comes to the venue they would most like to play at, the band’s answer is unanimous – the legendary Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow’s East End. “But it’s also nice that the band isn’t our job,” he adds. When it comes to their long-term ambitions for humor, he says they take it “week by week” and see how things go. “We regularly discuss how to balance our work commitments with the band, but the reality is that music isn’t a very well-paying career,” admits Patrizio. They launched a crowdfunding campaign to fund the trip and held a benefit concert in Glasgow. And while the band are “very excited” to play there, the practicalities of making the journey from Glasgow to Texas have proved difficult without major financial backing. It was a 21st century moment when they found out they were playing there, explains Patrizio, and drummer Ruairidh Smith forwarded a screenshot to the band’s WhatsApp group that read: “South By Southwest accepted artist”. South by Southwest will be her biggest gig to date. It seems that people in Europe are more willing to go to a gig with a band they’ve never heard of before.” “We were excited to go to France but we kind of expected to play to empty rooms,” adds lead singer Andreas Christodoulidis, “so it was a nice surprise to get there and find the gigs packed. “We’ve signed to an independent record label that’s great in terms of distribution and can take our music to places we’ve never been before.” “We had an interest from Europe pretty much straight away,” explains bassist Lewis Doig. It’s a great city to make music.”Īlthough still in their infancy as a band, Humor have played famous Scottish venues such as Glasgow’s King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut and Sneaky Pete’s in Edinburgh, as well as gigs across France and the Netherlands. We’ve met so many of our friends here through music and it’s inspiring to be around. “Musically there’s so much going on in Glasgow,” explains guitarist Ross Patrizio. And the punky, slightly manic music they created together clearly worked – NME named Humor as one of their “key upcoming artists for 2023” and praised their “superbly exciting debut EP.”īeing based in Glasgow, a city known for its live music scene, has in part contributed to Humour’s rapid rise. They’ve performed in different guises over the years, but locked down together during the Covid pandemic (they’re both roommates and bandmates) they really found their sound. Now you can add Scottish post-punk band Humor to that list – after the quintet were announced as performers at the 2023 festival.Ī mix of Scottish influences, the band members hail from Edinburgh and Perth but formed in Glasgow where they met while studying at university together. Kanye West, Bruce Springsteen, Dolly Parton, Lana Del Ray and even Barack Obama have performed at this major music, film and conference festival, which spans 10 days in March.
